Fon poetry: the Lŏ, the formula and the art of speech

Fon poetry is not written: it is spoken, sung, quoted. Its densest form is the Lŏ, the proverb — a few words that carry an entire line of reasoning.

The supreme form

The Lŏ, a three-second poem

In Benin, Lŏ condenses an observation of the world into a concrete image: a tree, a path, an animal. It never quite concludes — it is up to the listener to take the last step.

The great tree comes little by little

The great road begins to take shape

Usage

Quoting so as not to offend

Proverbs are often used to say what cannot be said: to reproach without accusing, to advise without giving orders, to refuse without hurting. Dropping a Lŏ at the right moment in a discussion is a social skill, not a literary ornament.

An art that is judged

In a gathering, whoever quotes aptly wins the room’s attention. Misplaced or mispronounced, the same proverb draws smiles — which is another reason tones matter so much.

Other forms

Songs, riddles and praise

Beyond the proverb, Fon oral tradition includes work songs and mourning songs, riddles posed to children in the evening, and praise formulas addressed to kings and to the vodun. All of them rely on rhythm and repetition, never on rhyme in the European sense.

Hearing the poem

Without the voice, only text remains

A Lŏ read flatly is no longer a poem: its meaning lies in the melody of the tones and in the silences. It is the one art where pronunciation is the content. The Parlons Fongbe Academy treats tones as a common thread, lesson after lesson, with a native speaker.

A literature without books

Fon poetry lives in memory and in the voice. You enter it through the ear, never through the page.
