Classification

Origins and linguistic classification

From a scientific point of view, Fon belongs to the large family of Niger-Congo languages. More precisely, it falls within the Volta-Niger branch and is part of the group of Gbe languages.

This group includes other related languages: Ewe, Aja, Gen, Gun, forming a complex linguistic continuum in the region.

Fon is an isolating language : grammatical categories are expressed by free lexemes rather than by internal changes to words. Its syntax follows the order Subject-Verb-Object (SVO).

Legacy

Historical and cultural heritage

The history of the Fon language is inseparable from that of the former Kingdom of Dahomey (Danxomɛ), whose official language it was. It held together the royal administration and trade.

The international influence of Fon shows in the word Vodun (“deity”), which gave rise to the word “Voodoo”, a religious practice exported to and adapted in Haiti and the Americas.

Phonetics

Tones and nasalization

Fon is an tonal language : the pitch of the voice can change the meaning of a word. Fon has two basic tones but four written marks, each shown by an accent on the vowel:

á
High tone
à
Low tone
ǎ
Rising tone
â
Falling tone

The details, with examples, are in our guide to Fongbe tones.

The vowel system includes 7 oral vowels and 5 nasal vowels. Nasal vowels are marked by adding an “n” after the vowel (an, ɛn, in, ɔn, un).

Geography

Where is Fon spoken?

More than 4 million people speak fɔ̀ngbè, mainly in southern Benin. It is also understood in neighboring areas of Togo and Nigeria.

Beware of a common shortcut: “Beninese” is not a language. Benin has several, including Fon, one of its national languages. When you look up “hello in Beninese” to talk with someone from the south, it is hello in Fon that you need to learn.

Writing

How is Fon written?

Fon is written with the Latin alphabet, supplemented by special letters such as ɖ, ɛ and ɔ, and by digraphs : gb, kp, ny. Tone accents are added on the vowels.
