calendar_month Fongbe basics
Learn Fon in 30 days
A step-by-step plan to speak fɔ̀ngbè in one month: alphabet, vocabulary, simple grammar and mini-dialogues. 20 minutes a day is enough if you stay consistent.
Foundations (days 1 to 7)
The first week is devoted to the alphabet and special sounds. Without this base, words become unreadable. Goal: recognize the letters ɖ, ɛ, ɔ and place the tones á, à.
Day 1-2 : alphabet and special letters. Day 3-4 : nasal vowels (an, ɛn, in, ɔn, un). Day 5-6 : the 2 phonemic tones (high / low). Day 7 : 10 greetings.
Essential vocabulary (days 8 to 14)
100 well-chosen words cover 80% of everyday exchanges. Focus on family, home, food and basic verbs.
Review 10 new forms a day with spaced repetition, using the site’s memory games.
Basic grammar (days 15 to 21)
Like English, fɔ̀ngbè follows Subject-Verb-Object order. The grammar is remarkably regular: no complex conjugation, tenses marked by particles.
Example: Un ɖù nùɖúɖú (“I am eating food”).
Speaking practice (days 22 to 30)
Move on to practice: dialogues at the market, greetings between friends, ordering at a restaurant. Look for a speaker in the Beninese diaspora around you — and failing that, train your ear with the Parlons Fongbe Academy, where a native speaker from Cotonou pronounces every form.
End-of-month goal
Introduce yourself, ask a price, order food, say thank you. That is the minimum for a trip to Benin. The rest comes with time.
30 days to get started
After one month you won’t be bilingual, but you will have a solid base and, above all, the habit. Learning a language is a marathon — this plan gets you through the first kilometer.
