quiz Vodun
Fâ, Fon divination
Fâ is the divination system of Vodun, based on 256 figures (“du”) obtained by casting cowries or nuts. Practiced by the bokonon for centuries, it still guides many Beninese people.
256 figures, 16 houses
Fâ is based on 16 basic figures that combine to give 256 “du” (signs), each with a precise cosmological meaning.
The Vodun diviner
In Benin, bokonon is the diviner initiated into Fâ. To consult, he casts cowries (akwɛ́) or uses a chain of nuts (akpan-kàn) that produces the sign.
When do people consult?
Today
Fâ is still widely consulted in Benin, alongside Christianity and Islam. For most believers it is a complementarypractice, not a competing one.
An ancient system
Fâ carries the whole of Fon cosmology: 256 signs to describe 256 human situations. A library of wisdom that is both mathematical and spiritual.
