How to react?

Not pejorative — just descriptive. Smile and answer “Good evening, I’m fine!” or in Fon “Un ɖò ganji”. The children will be delighted. Keep your sense of humor: it’s a sign of attention, not hostility.

One word, 400 years of history

Yovo is not an insult — it’s a linguistic heritage. Understanding it helps you enjoy the Beninese experience without misunderstandings.
