The 4 tones of Fongbe

In fɔ̀ngbè, a tonal language, the pitch of the voice changes the meaning of words. The system has 2 phonemic tones but 4 written marks. Here is how to recognize and produce them.

1
High tone

The high tone (á)

In Benin, high tone is marked by an acute accent (́) placed on the vowel. The voice is held at a high pitch, clear and steady. It is the tone that is easiest to pick out by ear.

wáto come
sáto rub
kúto die / to be dead
2
Low tone

The low tone (à)

In Benin, low tone is marked by a grave accent (̀). The voice drops and stays in the low register. In some transcriptions it is often the “default” tone of an unmarked syllable.

wàto do
kòto laugh
tòcountry

Minimal pair : wá (to come) vs wà (to do) — only the pitch of the tone distinguishes the two verbs.

Rising tone

The rising tone (ǎ)

Marked by an inverted circumflex (̌), the rising tone is a low-then-high combination on a single syllable. The voice starts low and quickly rises.

wǎto come (completed form)
ǎno (final negation)
ganstrong, big, boss
4
Falling tone

The falling tone (â)

Marked by a circumflex (̂), the falling tone is the mirror of the rising tone: high-then-low on one syllable. Less frequent, but present in key words.

hearing

Train your ear first

Listen before you speak. Repeat slowly after a native speaker. Many French-speaking learners neglect tones at first — and end up unintelligible in Abomey.

Pitch changes everything

The 4 tones of fɔ̀ngbè are not decorative: they carry meaning just as consonants do. Mastering their variations takes you from “gibberish” to “accurate pronunciation”.
