Greeting the elders: Kúdó

Dad, did you sleep well?
Dad (Tɔ́)
Ɛ̌ɛ̀n, un dó. Hwì ɖésú ká lo ?
Yes, I slept well. And you?
Child

I slept well. Have a good day at work.
Dad

May God guide you. Go well.

Important cultural rule

In Fon culture, a child must always greet their elders first in the morning. Failing to do so is considered a serious lack of respect. The expression « Kú dó ? » (Did you sleep well?) is the most common morning greeting.
