Learning Fon before a trip to Benin: the bare minimum

You can travel in Benin in French. But a few words of fɔ̀ngbè change the welcome, the prices and the encounters so much that it would be a shame to go without them. Here’s the bare essentials.

Priority 1

Always greet

In Benin, you don’t ask for directions, bargain or walk in anywhere without greeting first. Skipping this step isn’t neutral: it comes across as abrupt, and the exchange gets off to a bad start.
A fɔn ganji à ?did you wake up well?
Kú dó gbadagood evening
E ɖabɔgoodbye

Priority 2

Asking a price

Asking the price is the most useful sentence of your stay. Asked in Fon, it often changes the amount quoted — not by magic, but because it signals that you’re not just passing through.
Nabi

Getting around

Zemidjan (motorbike taxi), bush taxi, route: knowing how to say where you’re going and understanding directions avoids most travel misunderstandings.

Priority 4

Thanking and apologizing

Two reflexes that come up twenty times a day and make all the difference to the tone of an exchange.
Kwabɔwelcome — what you’ll hear as you walk in
Kɛnklɛnplease

Preparing seriously

If you leave in two months

For a short stay, a list of phrases is enough. For a long stay, an internship, an assignment or a move, it’s better to arrive able to hold a simple conversation: that’s the goal of the first third of the Fon video course, with a native speaker from Cotonou. A trial lesson is free.

Five minutes a day before you leave

Greet, ask a price, say where you’re going, say thank you. Four building blocks, and Benin no longer answers you in quite the same way.

Reading these words isn’t enough. You have to hear them.

In Fon, the pitch of your voice changes the meaning: à asks a question, ǎ says no. The Academy explains 818 forms, one by one, carried by a native voice — never a word without its meaning.
