What works

Strengths

Google Translate is useful for:

The common single words (water, house, eat)
The very simple sentences in SVO
Understanding the general meaning of a Fon text
The translations from English into Fon (better than from French)

2
What doesn’t work

The major limits

On the other hand, avoid Google Translate for:

The tones : completely ignored
The diacritics : often missing
The idiomatic expressions : translated word for word
The complex dialogues : the meaning gets lost
The cultural contexts : not taken into account

Concrete example

“How are you?” in Google Translate often gives an approximate translation instead of the correct Agbé meɖe ? or Àlàfíà wɛ̀ à ?. The result can be unintelligible to a native speaker.

How to use it wisely

A method for using Google Translate despite its limits:

1. Translate your sentence with Google
2. Check every word on fongbebenin.com
3. Add the missing diacritics (ɖ, ɛ, ɔ)
4. Take have a native speaker proofread it if the text matters

An imperfect but useful tool

Google Translate is a starting point, never a finish line. For fɔ̀ngbè, it is a useful crutch but never a guarantee of accuracy.
