Fon and translation AI

AIs like Google Translate and ChatGPT struggle with fɔ̀ngbè. Not out of neglect — the language itself poses fascinating technical challenges.

Challenge 1

Little training data

AIs learn from massive corpora of translated texts (EnglishFrench: billions of sentences). For fɔ̀ngbè, there are barely:

Bible~30,000 sentences
PressAlmost nothing
LiteratureVery limited
WebA few thousand

Less data = weaker learning = approximate translations.

Challenge 2

Tones invisible in writing

AIs process written text. But Fon tones are often left out in everyday writing (newspapers, the web). So the AI learns from texts where atɔ̀n (3) and atɔ́ɔ́n (5) are written “toneless” — it cannot tell them apart.

Challenge 3

A radically different structure

Fon does not have:

From conjugations
Anyarticles like “the” or “a”
From grammatical gender (no masculine/feminine)
From inflected plurals

But it does have:

A system of tense markers that is complex
A system of verb series strung in chains
A system of phonemic tones
A system of unique digraphs (GB, KP)

Hope

Progress is real. Projects like Masakhane (African AI) or Mozilla Common Voice are collecting Fon data to improve translators. In 5 years, the situation will probably be better.

A human language first and foremost

Translation AIs will never fully replace the human richness of fɔ̀ngbè. It is a language of relationships, culture and nuance — areas where humans keep a head start.
