How long does it take to speak Fon?

Simple conversation

With 20 to 30 minutes a day, this is the realistic threshold: asking a price, explaining a pain, saying where you’re going, understanding the reply. You can’t yet follow a fast conversation between native speakers, but you’re getting there.

What really speeds things up

Regularity, not intensity. Twenty minutes every day beats three hours on Sunday — in a tonal language, the ear needs closely spaced repetition.

Year 1

Following a family discussion

It’s the goal most diaspora learners set themselves: understanding what’s said at the table without anyone translating for them. A year of regular practice is enough.
