Memorizing Fon vocabulary: the repetition method that works

Learning 500 Fon words is not a matter of willpower but of scheduling. Here is the spaced repetition method applied to fɔ̀ngbè — and the mistake that makes it useless if you make it.

Review just before you forget

Spaced repetition means reviewing a word at the exact moment your memory starts to let go of it. A word you know comes back in a week; a word you hesitate on comes back tomorrow. It is the best-documented method for foreign-language vocabulary.
Concretely, for Fon: 10 new words a day at most, reviewed on day 1, day 3, day 7, day 21. After three months, you have 500 forms down.

Mistake no. 1

A card without sound is useless

This is the mistake that ruins most Fon flashcard systems: memorizing the spelling without the tone. You remember atɔ̀n and atɔ́ɔ́n as two strings of letters — when they are two different numbers, told apart only by the voice.

The absolute rule

Every word you memorize must have been heard spoken at least once. Without sound, you memorize a spelling, not a word.

In practice

Review without thinking about it

Repetition works best when it doesn’t feel like review. The Parlons Fongbe games are built for exactly that: multiple-choice quizzes, memory game, word search, fill-in-the-blank, timed Battle Rush.

The framework

Memorizing words, or learning to speak

Memorizing isolated vocabulary has a limit: you know words without knowing how to make a sentence with them. The Parlons Fongbe Academy tackles the problem from the other side — 79 video lessons, and at the end of each one, something you can say, not one more list.

A word never comes alone

In the course, each form appears in the situation where it is said: greeting in the morning, asking a price, describing a pain. It is this context that makes the word stick, far more than a flashcard.

Consistency beats intensity

15 minutes a day beats three hours on Sunday. The key is to hear each word before trying to memorize it.

Tools help you out. A method gets you talking.

Dictionaries, keyboards, translators: useful, but they don’t teach you to speak. 79 video lessons with a native speaker, in order, with tones taken seriously — that’s what the Academy does.
