Royalty

The structure of the monarchy

At the heart of the legacy of Danxomɛ is the figure of the sovereign, the Axɔ́sú. Royal power was centralized on the Abomey plateau.

Great sovereigns: Akábá, Agajá, Agɔngló, Gezo, Gbehanzin — each name is a political challenge loaded with meaning.

Organization

The army and the Amazons

The army of Dahomey was renowned for its discipline and organization. It notably included the Mino (“our mothers”), an elite female corps that Europeans called the Amazons of Dahomey.

Queen Hangbè

In the history of Dahomey, Tassi Hangbè (18th c.) was the only woman to reign over the kingdom; she was the sister of King Akaba. Her reign is shrouded in mystery because it was poorly documented by the men who succeeded her.

Spirituality

Vodun, a global cultural export

The most universal legacy of Danxomɛ is undoubtedly Vodun. The word means “the Spirit apart” and has traveled around the world.

The way Vodun took root in Haiti, in Louisiana and the Brazil through deported Africans is direct evidence of the resilience of Fon culture.
