How to say “I don’t understand” in Fon

It’s probably the most useful sentence in all of Fon for a beginner — and the one that will earn you the most goodwill, because it proves you’re trying.

The phrase

Saying you can’t follow

Negation in Fon goes after the verb, with ǎ at the end of the sentence. It’s the reverse of English, and it’s what confuses beginners most.
Un mɔ nu jɛ mɛ ǎ
I don’t understand Fon

The little word that changes everything

Don’t confuse ǎ, which negates, with à, which turns the sentence into a question. One tone apart, two opposite meanings — it’s the classic Fon trap.

Checking

Asking whether you’ve been understood

Useful the other way around: when you’re the one speaking and want to make sure you were clear.
Mi sè à ?have you understood? (plural)
A mɔ nu jɛ mɛ à ?have you understood?

Asking better

Asking someone politely to repeat

Admitting you don’t understand naturally goes with a request. Kɛnklɛn — “please” — is enough to make the request polite.
Kɛnklɛnplease
Agooexcuse me, may I
Kpla mi kɛnklɛnhelp me please

The real remedy

Understanding takes an ear, not vocabulary

You can know a word and not recognize it when it’s spoken — that’s the case for every self-taught learner of Fon. The only way out is repeated listening. The Parlons Fongbe Academy is built around this: a short video, then all the forms in the lesson to listen to as many times as needed, spoken by a native speaker from Cotonou.

Saying it is already taking part

Admitting in Fon that you don’t understand is better received than pretending in French.

Reading these words isn’t enough. You have to hear them.

In Fon, the pitch of your voice changes the meaning: à asks a question, ǎ says no. The Academy explains 818 forms, one by one, carried by a native voice — never a word without its meaning.
