Food in Fon: eating, drinking and table vocabulary
In Benin, nobody asks “how are you?” without asking whether you’ve eaten. Here is the Fon vocabulary of food — basic words, doughs, sauces, drinks — and the phrases that are actually useful at the table.
Four words before everything else
The water offered on arrival
Among the Fon, a visitor is handed a glass of water before any conversation. Kwabɔ, nù sìn — “welcome, drink some water” — is not an empty courtesy: it is the gesture that opens the exchange.
Doughs, the heart of the meal
Sauces, meat and fish
At the market as at the restaurant
The name of the sauce is enough to order: you say the dish, then what goes with it. Un ba akpan kpó atá — “I want akpan with sauce”.
Water, soft drinks and alcohol
Eating is talking
The meal is the first ground for conversation in Benin. With some thirty words, you stop being a spectator at the table.
Reading these words isn’t enough. You have to hear them.
In Fon, the pitch of your voice changes the meaning: à asks a question, ǎ says no. The Academy explains 818 forms, one by one, carried by a native voice — never a word without its meaning.
