A tonal language doesn’t correct itself. Here is where to find Fon speakers to practice with, how to approach the exchange — and what to do when you have no one around you.

Option 1
Family and the diaspora
This is the most effective and most overlooked resource. A parent, an uncle, a Beninese neighbor: explicitly ask them to speak to you in Fon rather than translate for you. Many families switch to French out of politeness by reflex — often you just need to ask for the opposite.

Option 2
Associations and places of worship
Beninese associations, religious communities, neighborhood shops and restaurants: these are places where Fon is really spoken. Greeting people properly as you come in almost always opens the conversation.

Option 3
On the ground, in Benin
In Cotonou or Abomey, a few words of Fon radically change the welcome you get. Markets, motorcycle taxis, neighborhood hotels: the effort is immediately recognized, and corrected kindly.

With no one around
When there’s no one to talk to
This is the most common case, and it’s where most learners give up. The Parlons Fongbe Academy puts a native speaker from Cotonou in every one of the 79 lessons : you hear the correct form before producing it, as many times as you need, and you know what you’re saying — never a word without its translation.
The right solo method
Listen, pause, repeat out loud, compare. It’s the exercise that best replaces a partner when you don’t have one.
Speak, even badly
A mistake spoken out loud gets corrected. A mistake kept in your head stays.
