Translating from Fon into English: the reliable method (and its pitfalls)
A dictionary gives you a word. It doesn’t give you the tone, the word order, or what people actually say in the situation. Here is how to translate from Fon without getting it wrong — and why the ear always has the final say.
Look up the word, not the sentence
Tone is part of the word
What no dictionary can fix
You can translate correctly and pronounce wrongly — and be misunderstood. The four tones (á high, à low, ǎ rising, â falling) are learned by ear, not from a table column.
Rebuild in Fon word order
Get it checked by a native voice
The rule that prevents 90% of mistakes
Never publish a Fon sentence (tattoo, announcement card, message) without having heard it spoken. Writing alone is not enough for a tonal language.
Translate, then listen
The dictionary finds the word, the translator suggests the sentence, but it is the ear that confirms. Start with the tools, finish with the voice.
Tools help you out. A method gets you talking.
