The family in Fon: Hɛnnu
In Benin, the family (Hɛnnu) is not limited to the nuclear circle. It encompasses a complex social, ancestral and spiritual reality. Master this essential vocabulary to understand Fon society.
Parents and couples
Fon sometimes uses different terms depending on age or social rank, reflecting the importance given to family hierarchy.
Brothers, sisters and children
The notion of brother and sister is often grouped under the term Nɔ̀ví (literally « child of the mother »):
The clan and alliances
The concept of Akɔ̀ refers to the clan or the extended family. That’s where you find cousins, uncles, aunts and in-laws.
Marriage (Asidida)
A key step that binds two clans, it includes the dowry (Asibyɔ́gbàn) and the mutual recommendations between families (Asídídó).
The family compound (Xwédó)
It is within the family compound (Xwédó) that ceremonies take place and tradition is carried on. It is the geographic and spiritual heart of the extended family.
Hɛnnu: the bedrock of society
Understanding family vocabulary opens a door onto how daily life is organized and onto the values of respect that shape interactions in Benin.
