Online Fon dictionaries: what they can do — and what they can’t
A Fon dictionary gives you an equivalent. It doesn’t give you the tone, the register or the situation. Here is how to use one properly, and the point at which you need something more.

What works
The dictionary is excellent for one thing
Finding an isolated word whose form you’ve forgotten. For that, it is fast and irreplaceable. Our translator adds a useful safeguard: it queries two engines and shows where they differ, which immediately flags questionable entries.

Limitation 1
Tones get lost along the way
Most online Fon databases store words without full diacritics, or with conventions that differ from one source to another. You end up with an approximate spelling — and so potentially a different word.
à ≠ ǎ
Questions and negation, one tone apart

Limitation 2
A word has no meaning outside a situation
“Thank you” is said differently depending on whether you’re thanking an elder, a shopkeeper or a friend. A dictionary lines up equivalents; it doesn’t tell you which one to use with whom — and in Benin, that choice matters more than the word itself.

Next steps
A dictionary explained, rather than looked up
That is exactly the gap a course fills. The Parlons Fongbe Academy explains 818 forms one by one, in the situation where they are used, pronounced by a native speaker from Cotonou — with one rule kept on every screen: never a Fon form without its translation.
The difference
A dictionary gives you a word when you look it up. A course gives you the word before you need to look it up.
Look it up, then learn it
Keep a dictionary at hand for quick fixes. To speak, you need the voice and the right order.
