Trees and plants in Fon: from sacred wood to traditional medicine

A tree is a place as much as a plant: people gather under it, leave offerings there, draw remedies from it. Here is the Fon vocabulary of plant life and what it says about the relationship to the living world.

Vocabulary

Naming wood and trees

Atin covers tree, wood and charcoal at once — the material rather than the species. This is a common logic in Fon: one word for the substance, compounds for its uses.

The sacred

The iroko and the trees no one cuts down

Some trees are never felled. Iroko is used to carve ritual objects; others mark the site of an altar or the memory of an event. In Ouidah, the Tree of Forgetting — Atín wɔn — has gone down in history as one of the most harrowing sites of the slave trade.

Healing

Plants that heal

Fon traditional medicine relies on leaves, bark and roots, prepared as decoctions or poultices. The knowledge is passed down orally, often within the same family, and it is spoken in Fon — not in French.

A vocabulary that is fading

Many plant names exist only in the local language and disappear with the elders who use them. It is one of the most concrete reasons to learn Fon rather than settle for French.

Passing it on

What doesn’t survive translation

Asking for a recipe, understanding a dosage, grasping the nuance between two preparations: all of this happens in the language. The Parlons Fongbe Academy takes you from the first greeting to conversation in 79 video lessons with a native speaker — enough to ask your questions yourself.

Plants and memory

Naming a tree in Fon often means naming a place, a rite or a remedy. Plant vocabulary is a vocabulary of transmission.

Reading these words isn’t enough. You have to hear them.

In Fon, the pitch of your voice changes the meaning: à asks a question, ǎ says no. The Academy explains 818 forms, one by one, carried by a native voice — never a word without its meaning.
