The wake-up call: “Mi site!”

The first verse is a national wake-up call. The verb site (to rise, to stand up) is a collective imperative. In Fon, mi is the inclusive “we” pronoun — the poet includes himself in the call. It is not an order from above; it is a fraternal invitation.

The image of dawn (hǒn yányí = new light) symbolizes independence: the end of the colonial night and the start of an era of freedom. This metaphor is universal but takes on a special meaning in fɔ̀ngbè, where hǒn (light) is also linked to knowledge and truth.

Courage and unity: “Ayi do hunhon”

The refrain (Hanyiyi) is the emotional heart of the anthem. Ayì means the heart (in the moral and spiritual sense). Hùnhǒn combines hùn (blood) and hǒn (dawn) — a blend of physical courage and hope.

In Fon culture, blood (hùn) represents lineage, ancestral heritage. To say ayì do hùnhǒn is to draw strength from your roots to build the future.

AyìHeart, conscience
HùnBlood, lineage
DjiwèStrength, energy
Fɔ́nTo rise

Heritage and pride: “Benin to vi le mi”

The expression Benin to vi le mi (we are the children of Benin) sums up national identity. In Fon, presenting yourself as the vǐ (child) of a place expresses a deep bond of belonging.

The anthem in fɔ̀ngbè carries a special emotional charge because it speaks to the people in their mother tongue. When Beninese people in the diaspora sing it in Fon, it is an act of cultural resistance and pride in their identity.

A living anthem

The anthem in fɔ̀ngbè is not just an official text — it is a rallying song that Beninese people strike up at celebrations, in stadiums and at community gatherings. It links the country’s modernity to the wisdom of the ancestral language.
