Structure

Subject-Verb-Object (SVO)

In Fon, the order is always: Who does what to whom/what. It is the most natural structure for an English speaker.

Un ɖù nǔ
I eat (something)
Vǐ ɔ́ mɔ̀ avǔn
The child sees the dog
Nɔ̀ nyɛ́ ɖà nǔ
My mother cooks

Subject pronouns always go before the verb:

AI
AYou
ÉHe / She
MǐWe / You (plural)
YeThey

Questions and negations

To ask a question, you add a particle at the end of the sentence:

A ɖù nǔ à ?
Did you eat?
É wǎ à ?
Did he come?

For the negative, you frame the verb with má and ǎ :

Un má ɖù nǔ ǎ
I haven’t eaten
